PROPERTY EVALUATION OF GLASSCRETE BLOCKS USING GLASS POWDER AS PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF CEMENT

Abstract

The glass waste produced in the Philippines is underutilized in terms of recycling. The use of glass particles as coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, and pozzolanic materials has been researched, but no intensive use of glass in this way is currently practiced in the country. This study examines the use of glass powder (GP) as cement replacement and glass sand (GS) as fine aggregate replacement in concrete. The results of the replacement were evaluated in terms of the compressive and flexural strength of the concrete produced, as well as an economic analysis. GS replacement of sand was at proportions of 10% and 20%. Cement was replaced by GP in proportions of 10%, 20%, and 30%. The specimens were tested only during the 28-day field curing period. The slump, compressive strength, and flexural strength tests were conducted for the said replacements. The results showed that glass replacement increased the workability of concrete. Replacement of both GS and GP decreased both the compressive and flexural strength of concrete when compared to the control (pure cement and sand). The best compressive strength was achieved by the 10% GS and 10% GP treatment, while the best flexural strength was achieved by the 20%GS and 10%GP treatments. The economic analysis indicates that the use of glass sand increases the cost while the replacement of cement with glass powder produces a reduction in costs.
