DESIGN, FABRICATION, AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF FINNED BATCH-TYPE CARBONIZER

Author
PRINCE JANN DUCADO DELA CRUZ
Abstract

The study was conducted to design, fabricate, and evaluate the performance of a finned batch-type carbonized for carbonized rice hull production. The performance of the carbonized was evaluated in terms of machine capacity, total time of operation, biochar yield, thermal efficiency, and pyroligneous liquor production potential. Economic analysis was performed in terms of cost-benefit ratio and return on investment. The data was compared to four other carbonizes, namely: drum-type carbonized, double-drum carbonized, compartmentalized rice hull carbonized, and continuous rice hull carbonized. Performance evaluation shows that the carbonized has a mean machine capacity of 2.78kg/hr at 10.06hr total time of operation with a biochar yield of 43.22%, a thermal efficiency of 44.62%, and pyroligneous liquor production potential of 0.99mL/kg. When the means of the five carbonizes with the respective parameters are compared, the total time of operation has a high difference, the machine capacity has a high difference except for the continuous carbonized, and the biochar yield has a low difference for only the continuous and finned batch-type carbonizes, and the pyroligneous liquor production potential has a low difference except for the drum-type carbonized. For this reason, the researcher recommends the use of carbonized.
