Generation Z uses social media to engage in online discussions on sociopolitical issues. Social media is viewed as powerful and successful in sharing one's thoughts or opinions online. It's also utilized to share first-hand knowledge gained via research with others because of its broad scope and the number of people it reaches. The aim of this paper is to explore how Generation Z employs social media for civic engagement and social movements amidst the pandemic.
Using qualitative research design, this study structured interviews for the Key Informant Interview (KII), In-Depth Interview (IDI), and Archival research. Fifteen (15) Generation Z informants that are affiliated with organizations under YADO (Youth Organization Development Office) of General Santos City were in- depth interviewed, four (4) representatives from the Sangguniang Kabataan and one (1) representative from YADO had participated the Key Informant Interview.
The study found how Generation Z utilizes social media for civic engagement and social movement amidst the pandemic. Social media platforms became a venue for engagement between people in society during the COVID-19 crisis. Individuals, institutions, government agencies, and other social entities are increasingly turning to social media platforms to manage their affairs, as is the case with Generation Z, who see social media as a link to their real-world identity and continue to pursue their interests and engagement online.
