Abstract

This paper studies about the Four Survival Archetypes according to Caroline Myss in the works of the famous Japanese Nobel Prize winner Kenzaburo Oe. It aims to discuss and understand the detailed maps of the unconscious, spelling out the universal roles that all of us unwittingly play out, guided by archetypes or story models. According to Chopra, 2016, we typically only carry a handful of them during our life, these helping to define our outer personality as well as the course of our lives. As originally proposed in C. G. Jung's work, and further delineated by Caroline Myss, among the many different combinations of archetypal selves that you carry at any one time, there are four that are always common to everyone-the archetypes of survival: Victim, Saboteur, Prostitute, and Inner Child. Through this we may be able to identify the underlying issues of the main characters in Oe's books by simply connecting them to the definition of each archetype. The significance of this study is to help readers be aware of certain survival archetypes and its tendencies using Formalistic Approach. On why these personalities and issues exist. It helps us become aware of the state of mind especially in terms of emotional and physical state.
