Author
KURT RUSSELL LACORTE
Abstract

This paper analyzed the Victorian Masculinity of the male characters of the Sherlock Holmes book series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. To answer this problem, the researcher used Formalistic Approach to characterize the characters and qualify them to the characteristics of a Victorian Masculine in terms of attributes, behaviors and roles. The researcher then enumerated the characteristics of the men characters that do not adhere to what a Victorian Masculine should be and used the Queer Theory to analyze their characteristics that can be considered as queer. The result showed that the men characters in the Sherlock Holmes book series portray the characteristics of a Victorian Masculine, however their underlying queerness manifest occasionally and with the influence of the other characters. This study recommends further studies on any form of literature, novels, short stories, or poems, films that was published during the Victorian era or portrays the time during Victorian era such as The Picture of Dorian Gray or BBC's Sherlock.
