WRITING SKILLS OF GRADE 7 STUDENTS

Abstract

This study is concerned on analyzing the written essays of the Grade 7 students through locating the errors in grammar and mechanics in their written essays. Corder's Error Analysis was utilized in this study in order elaborated the significance of errors found in the written essay of the Grade 7 students of Sufan Integrated School. Burt and Kiparsky's concept on global and local errors were used to determine the classes of errors found in the written essay of the students. This research study is a qualitative in nature and uses descriptive content analysis to describe and explain the errors present in the written essays. The result of this study showed that error in grammar particularly in Subject Verb Agreement is the most frequent error made by the students. In mechanics, on the other hand, the error of using punctuation marks got the highest number of errors. The study found out that the dominant sources of these errors is local error. These errors show that the students are still in need to know the rules of subject verb agreement and proper use of punctuation marks. This also shows that even if errors are inevitable, still the meaning that the students want to convey has been established.
