LANGUAGE USE: EXPOSURE AND PREFERENCE

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the English language exposure and language preference among the 1st year Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies (BAELS) students of Mindanao State University- General Santos City (MSU-GSC). This study answered what level of language exposure and preference of the BAELS students in terms of: speaking, listening, writing and reading. What is the implication of the English language exposure and preference to the use of language. Descriptive method of research was applied in this study. A total enumeration method was applied to get the number of the respondents. Survey questionnaire was utilized in gathering data, the data were collected tabulated, interpreted, using the descriptive statistical tools, such as count percentage, mean, and correlation. Generally, the results of the study showed that majority of the students are exposed to the speaking skills and Strongly Agree in using English. The level of the language exposure and preference among the 40 BAELS students in terms speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Speaking skills got the highest percentage both language exposure and preference. In terms of language exposure, it has an overall weighted mean of 4.042 described as Strongly Agree. In language preference, it has an overall weighted mean of 4.57 described as Cebuano. These means that among the 40 students of BAELS are exposed in speaking English in classroom and preferred to speak Cebuano. English Language exposure and the language preference to the use of language are based on the similarity of what level skills have found in this study, which both language exposures and language preferences of the students in speaking skills result with the same highest percentage.
