Abstract

This research study aimed to determine that clown characters have duality in nature which includes how they are portrayed in the animated series and their characteristics as a sane man and as a trickster. The data used in this study are the Hunter x Hunter (2011) series and Batman: The Animated Series (1992 - 1995). The researcher used Formalistic Approach by Skylar Burris to characterize who are the clowns in the series and how are they portrayed and Psychological Approach in duality in human nature by James Sully to know how these characters portrayed as a sane man and as a trickster. The study found out that Hisoka and Joker's duality in human nature is a natural phenomenon. It was further found out that there is no perfect person who ensembles a good and a bad trait, people have gentle and dark sides and it is up to the person's choice of what characteristic he wanted to be dominated from. Finally, we may think of clowns as happy figures, but they can do their comic masks to shroud deeper, darker psychological dynamics.
