Abstract

Academic performance has been the essence of scholastic achievement. Students, in their free time, participate in recreational activities for pastime and to eliminate boredom. One of these activities include being exposed and having access to internet gaming. In this study, the researcher aims to determine whether internet gaming exposure shares a relationship with English academic performance between second year and third-year Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies students at Mindanao State University - General Santos City. Twenty (20) students were surveyed of their internet gaming behavior and numerical grades from nine (9) major English subjects. Results showed that student-gamers were seldom exposed to internet gaming activities with an arithmetic mean of 3.105. Their academic performance in major English subjects accumulated a mean of 1.82 which was qualitatively described as Very Satisfying. The results were examined through a correlational analysis test and with p=0.789, the null hypothesis was thereby accepted. It was then concluded that there is no significant relationship between the degree of internet gaming exposure and academic performance in English subjects of student-gamers of Mindanao State University - General Santos City, as supported by substantial statistical evidence.
