SWEAR WORDS OF THE MOBILE LEGEND PLAYERS: A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

Swearing is a linguistic phenomenon which is frequently showed in various media such as magazines, newspapers, advertisement, and movie; regarding that it happens commonly in spite of its taboo sense and referring to social norm deviation. This study focused on the used of swear words uttered by the Mobile Legend Players. The aim of this study consist of (1) to determine the swear words and phrases that is being uttered by the Mobile Legend Players in terms of Abusive swear, Cathartic swear, Dysphemistic swear, Emphatic swear, and Idiomatic swear. (2) to know what functions do swear words serve to the social actors and (3) to know the implications of their swearing. This study used the descriptive qualitative method, with the theory of Steven Pinker (2007) and Magnus Ljung (2011). The researcher used virtual recording (an edited video of wrecker) to collect and determine the swear words uttered by the players. The virtual recorded was used to analyse the data as the researcher transcribed and select the swear words and phrases that could be used to identify the swears according to Pinker's Category. This study revealed that Idiomatic, and abusive swears are commonly used by the Mobile Legend Players.
