DISAPORA AND IDENTITY OF OVERSEAS FILIPINO WORKER IN FILMS

Abstract

This study was qualitative in nature that employed content analysis. The study used formalistic approach in characterizing the protagonists and identifying their significance in the selected Filipino films namely: Caregiver, A Mother's Story, and Hello, Love, Goodbye. Second, the study utilized Diaspora Theory by Michel Bruneau in identifying the characteristic of diaspora that can be found in protagonists of the selected films. Lastly, the study used sociological approach in determining their social status and environment they have been in the host country. The results showed that the characters are struggling from loneliness of their family and undergoing pressure of their responsibilities to accomplish their goals in life. Through their hardships they have been in other countries, they build a new identity, as Overseas Filipino Worker. They have the function that makes the economy of the host country and their homeland afloat.
