RETRIEVAL AND TRANSLATION OF MAGUINDANAON FOLKTALES AND LEGENDS

This study used descriptive-analytic design. It aimed to retrieve and translate the Maguindanaon folktales and legends from Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat. Using an android cellphone, eight (8) folktales and seven (7) legends were gathered from six (6) Maguindanaon native informants, who are indigenous residents of the four (4) selected barangays in Palimbang Sultan Kudarat. These folk materials were transcribed using Maguindanaon language and were translated into English language by three (3) translators. The translated texts were then validated by three (3) validators. Using the Criteria for Valid Translation adapted from Larsen (1998), the result showed that the translated materials, folktales (94%) and legends (92%) have very high level of competency. Also, the retrieved folktales and legends reflect the Maguindanaon culture and customs of their society, the symbols of braveness, how the places originated, their simple sense of justice, their popularity from their imaginative characters, and focus of their actions and the fundamental wisdom they manifest. This study recommends the preservation of these translated materials through development of instructional materials such as big books, animated films and videos.
