Abstract

This study aimed to determine the Reading attitudes and habits of Grade 7 students of Malandag National High School. The study was conducted using a survey questionnaire distributed to 80 students from Malandag National High School. The researcher used Survey of Adolescent Reading Attitudes (SARA) by Smith (1991) to determine the reading attitudes of the respondents. Results showed that the students have highly positive level of reading attitudes, mean (3.78), the students tend to read the teenage romance, comedy and action/adventure genres in both online and printed materials. The result also showed that there is no significant difference between the Grade 7 students' online reading and printed material reading (0.850 and t-value 0.190) and also the reading attitudes significantly relate to their choice of reading materials, be it online or printed materials (p-value 0.017 and R-value 0.0.17). Future researchers are encouraged to replicate this study with the same subjects which are the Grade 7 students (Grade 8 in the next school year, so as to monitor if they have changed in terms of their attitude and habits towards.) and the teacher may use the result as a basis for developing strategies to develop reading habits of students.
