THE JOURNEY FROM CONTRAPASSO IN DANTE ALIGIHIERI'S DIVINE COMEDY

This qualitative study is mainly concerned with the allegorical journey of Dante in Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. The study utilized Formalistic Approach, Mythological Approach, and Psychobiography to examine and analyze the characteristics of the epic hero and discuss the concept of Contrapasso in the Divine Comedy and Reader-response to create a series of pen and ink drawings. The result showed that Dante, the epic hero, lacks some heroic traits but compensates this by his exponential growth in terms of wisdom and courage. He was able to utilize his wit and wisdom throughout his pilgrimage; it was also shown that the punishments of sins are God's justice for the sinner to repent for their sins. Furthermore, through the use of Psychobiography it was revealed that Dante Alighieri's work the Divine Comedy is heavily influenced by his experiences in life, it unveiled Dante's different perspectives in the society as he continue to progress on his journey through the three realms. Based from the analysis of Dante's epic, the researcher was inspired to come up with a series of drawings as a response to the epic. As a whole this study emphasizes the concept of Contrapasso and the redemption from sin.
