The study sought to assess the reading performance of the grade 3 pupils in Balunto Elementary School (School Year 2019-2020). It was designed to find out the reading skills and the level of the reading performance of these respondents and also the validated materials and strategies that were used by the teachers to improve their reading comprehension. The respondents of the study are 100 pupils from the three sections of Grade 3 with reading difficulties. The findings in the study revealed that the reading performance using the validated materials from the strategies were rated poor for grade 3 pupil respondents. Furthermore, low reading performance in Diagnostic Test and Achievement Test were highly related with the low GPA obtained by the pupils upon employing Pearson Product Moment Correlation (r). Evolvement of remedial reading program, combination of several methods and strategies in teaching, organization of functional adult literacy program, and continued study for the advancement of teachers' professional standing and efficiency were some suggestions and recommendations for upgrading and uplifting the mastery of reading skills of the children especially in remote areas in far flung
barangays.
