In the present day, multiple factors affect and contaminate the soil which make it less efficient in terms of plant yielding. A hydroculture on growing plants is beginning to substitute soil in sustaining worldwide vegetation and crop production. A subset of this hydroculture is hydroponics- a technique of growing plants on a water-based environment.
The goal of this study is to build a monitoring system for hydroponic plant growing. With these plants grown without soil and mainly dependent on water, the amount and temperature of the water together with its living conditions are monitored. The Arduino Uno microcontroller acts as the brain of the system and will poll the Temperature and Humidity Sensor, Float Switches, and Waterproof Temperature Sensor for information.
The user will be able to know the temperature of the water, the ambient temperature, the humidity of the surrounding area, and the water level of the system reservoirs through an Android Application which is developed using Blynk. The android application is designed to notify in case of water supply shortage, unsuitable water temperature, or inappropriate temperature and humidity of the area or room wherein the hydroponic system is placed. This automated system is installed with a water and air pump to supply water and adjust the parameters to maintain optimal plant growth.
In this study, ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module connects the sensors to the android application. The proponents tested the working distance of the Android phone to the hydroponics system where the transmitter module is attached. The proponents also tested the monitoring system by collecting the data for water temperature, ambient temperature, surrounding area humidity, and water level displayed on the Android Application.
