SYMBOLS IN THE NOVELS OF DAN BROWN

Abstract

     This study is qualitative in nature that used content analysis. The study utilized Formalistic Approach and Biographical Approach in identifying and discussing the symbols in the two novels. The study used and analyzed the Novels of Dan Brown, namely. Angels and Demons and The DA Vinci Code. In Angels and Demons, the symbols are: the Conclave, the Illuminati, the mystical elements Earth, Air, Fire and Water. In The DA Vinci Code. the major symbols are: Pentacle, Mona Lisa, Madonna of the Rocks, Holy Bible, Jesus Christ. The Last Supper. Mary Magdalene, Sex Rile, The Priory of Sion. Holy Grail. Keystone. and Rosslyn Chapel These symbols generally function clues to solve the murder case that the man characters have to solve in the novels and provide insights to science and religion. Brown's interest with puzzles, mysteries and secrets were his personality traits revealed in his novels. Brown and his wife Blythe also travelled to Rome as travel partners on research trips. It is concluded that symbols are the main focuse in these two novels. Symbols are interconnected that makes the story more interesting.
