Grammatical and Textual Competence of Grade 8 Students in General Santos City National Secondary School of Arts and Trades

In the 21st century, it is very important to be globally competitive in terms of using the English language. Competent people can produce and organize language in communication Moreover, a language user needs to use English correctly and appropriately. It is essential to have the ability to express ideas and string them together to form contextually appropriate texts. This study is descriptive-correlational. It aimed to find out the "Grammatical and Textual Competence of 250 respondents of Grade 8 Students in General Santos City National Secondary School of Arts and Trades" It utilized the Grammatical Competence Test and Textual Competence Test adapted from the studies of Dionio & Gallera and Celiz & Longanilla. Statistical tools such as arithmetic mean, mean percentage, and Pearson r were also used to help identify the result of the study The results revealed that the Grade 8 students have a moderate level of grammatical competence and also a moderate level of textual competence. On the other hand, the grammatical and textual competence of the students has no significant relationship as evidenced by an r-value of -132 with a p-value of .056. This study recommends that the students should be given more activities in terms of expanded sentences as well as on rhetoric in terms of textual competence. The teachers should also devise activities focused on the grammatical competence of the students for this affects their textual competence.
