Abstract

The paper focuses on monitoring and control of water level and also the control of solenoid valve using SMS thus uses GSM that communicates the user and microcontroller. This study aims to establish a communication between the GSM module, microcontroller and solenoid valve. It aims to automate the refilling of water by turning on/off when it reaches the minimum/maximum water level through the measurement of ultrasonic sensor. Also, it aims to control the switching of the solenoid valve in irrigation side by sending an SMS to the GSM and receiving a feedback from the GSM that it has turned on/off.

Data can be fed directly from the GSM module to Arduino using the TTL output pins and AT commands were used to enable the sending, receiving, reading, and deleting the messages. In this study, in order to turn on the draining solenoid, the user must send an SMS to the GSM module with the syntax ‘B1” and to turn it off, the user must send "B0”. The Controller box was designed and acts as the central control of the system which consists of: GSM module, microcontroller and circuit boards, while the solenoid valves and the HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor were designed in such a way that it can be detached in the casing. The system was tested several times until it achieves the goal of the study.

After several trials conducted, the data were gathered such as time it took the solenoid to turn on/off when the control message was sent. It took an average time delay of 3.122 seconds for the Drain solenoid to turn on while it took 3.858 seconds to turn off. The performance of the system was also tested whether the system runs accurately. Also, Out of the 15 trials conducted, Drain Solenoid turned on with a success rate of 66.67% and turned off with a success rate of 60%.
