Abstract

General Santos City Central Public Market poses significant challenges for wastewater treatment due to the relatively high strength of the discharges and variability of flows which generates at least 40 cubic meters of wastewater daily. An existing wastewater facility is located near the public market to ensure that the wastewater from the public market will be treated before it will be discharged to Sarangani Bay. This study aims to investigate and assess the wastewater treatment facility in General Santos City Central Public Market, specifically focusing on its condition and the efficiency of the discharged water. A gallon of water sample was analyzed to ensure the current effectiveness of the facility. An interview was conducted with the acting head of the Waste Management Office-Air and Water Pollution Control Division and conducted site visits to know the current physical condition of the facility. The results from the analyzed water sample show that the wastewater treatment facility is efficient and can cater to the amount of wastewater that the General Santos Central City Public Market produces daily. The conducted interview and site visit shows that the facility also produces a foul odor, has damaged parts, and is a breeding site for mosquitoes. From the results of the conducted interview, site visit, and water analysis, it is recommended that the WMO-AWPCD must maintain their regular inspection and evaluation, repair the damaged parts in the facility, display warning signage to ensure the security of the facility, and do regular cleaning to reduce the foul odor it produces and prevent the mosquitoes from breeding.
