Abstract

This study is qualitative in nature that employed content analysis The study utilized Formalistic Approach and Psychological Approach in identifying and discussing the main characters characteristics and their reaction to cosmic honor in the short stories The study focuses pnmanly on Lovecraft's philosophical idea of 'cosmierse, which is the notion that the human species is small, transient and insignificant in relation to the cosmos. As this study demonstrates and discusses the otherwise pessimistic and unnatural implications of how cosmic honor can be conveyed through certain elements and themes in the stones that are present. The investigations and analysis in the stones tend to bring about fnghtening and disheartening implications of how humans are threatened by cosmic entities. As different cosmic elements aare brought into the stories. the protagonists' limited understanding of these. nd the confusion and rear that eventually develops into cosmic horror as they realize humanity's fragile and threatened position in the universe. The results showed that cosmic horror brought about by the 'Old Ones' is the most prominent and common emotion the characters displayed in the short stories. The stones show how the characters realize the true aspect of cosmic reality leading them to madness.
