Abstract

Parallel to the looming car ownership and transportation demand is the emergent call for the improvement of traffic convenience and advancement of roads not just on the part of the drivers but also for its pedestrians. Santiago Boulevard located at Brgy. Dadiangas South Genereal Santos City is the main Boulevard for the people entering and exiting the General Santos City Public Market and the nearby establishments making it one of the major busiest Boulevard in the city where a large number of drivers and commuters are passing the street and high volume of pedestrians are crossing on the opposite direction along on it. The growing population, advent of modernization, and technology rise up demands for a safer road not just for pedestrians in the area but also for the driver's arid commuters. By ocular observation, it is alarming that there are so many pedestrians climbing on the street railings to cross the road even if there were designated pedestrian lanes in the area. It is very dangerous on the part of the jaywalkers to cross the road using the steel railings, they might get hit by the coining vehicles, This study was undertaken to present the volume of pedestrians crossing on the right pedestrian lanes and the volume of pedestrians crossing with violations on this Boulevard. Based on the pedestrian volume count conducted ir, the Boulevard for four days which were divided into 2 weekends and 2 weekdays, it was found that pedestrians the most number of pedestrians that crossed the Boulevard by pedestrian lanes or jaywalking were to be 4 to 6 pin in the afternoon for both males and females pedestrians. It was also the projected busiest market time, Pedestrians crossing the road on the pedestrian lanes have the average percentage according to the highest frequency in each day. On the pedestrians walking on the pedestrian lanes, female pedestrians in 4:30-4:45 marked the highest frequency of 204 with a percentage of 15% of the total 19,661 female pedestrians in four days while male pedestrians hit the high volume of 170 in 5:45-6:00 pm. Pedestrians who tend to jaywalkers on the Boulevard have an alarming percentage of .96% for female jaywalkers recorded on the last day. Male jaywalkers marked the highest volume of 6.24% (75 of 1201) tallied on the first day. Out of 26 726 pedestrians crossing along Santiago Boulevard, 19,661 (73.57%) are pedestrian lane users regarding their genders. Jaywalkers are 7 065 (26.43%) in volume from the total pedestrians tallied in four days. With these results. Upgrading the physical condition of the Boulevard should be considered. This includes visible pavement markings visible and accessible pedestrian Janes. Also, the improvement of steel railings/barriers in the Boulevard. Moreover, strict and proper implementation of authority or laws on pedestrian violators must be done on the Boulevard.
