Abstract

The objective of this study is to reduce the emissions of carbon monoxide without using an extension device. We improved the internal muffler we made to reduce carbon emissions by the means of a filter element with caustic soda flakes. This study also aims to compare the results of using different diameters with the same length of filter elements installed inside the muffler which improved the edging design and the results obtained from the extension device used from the previous models. Based on a previous model by Bautista and Go (2014), which used 3-inch and 4-inch muffler extension devices with caused soda granules placed in each device. The average percentage reduction of Carbon Monoxide is 40.48 and Carbon Dioxide is 46.24 for the 3-inch extension device, while the Carbon monoxide and Carbon dioxide for the 4-inch extension device made an average percentage reduction of 49.20 and 47.52 respectively. This study constructed two improvised internal mufflers. For the carbon dioxide emission using the muffler with the first filter element (l16cm, id. 3cm, o.d. 5cm) made an average percentage reduction of 51, while for the second filter element (L=16cm, Ld 5cm, o.d. 7cm) made an average percentage of 71. For the carbon monoxide emission using a muffler with the first filter element made an average percentage reduction of-158, while for the second filter element made an average percentage of -220. This study came to the conclusion that the larger filter element installed in the muffler can reduce carbon dioxide emissions. However, the reduction of carbon monoxide came with negative results. Repeatedly starting and stopping the engine gives different values of carbon monoxide. Thus, carbon monoxide is dependent in vehicles starting mostly with in carburetor type.
