WOMEN IN THE NOVELS OF ALICE WALKER

This study is qualitative in nature that employs content analysis. The study utilized a Formalistic approach in identifying and discussing the significant women characters' characteristics, struggles, and resolutions to the suffering inflicted upon them. The results showed that the significant women characters possess the qualities of being reserved, passive, iterate, ignorant, innocent, and inferior. Moreover, these women received massive abuses from the other characters and the society in which they suffered physically, sexually, emotionally, psychologically, and socially; however, despite the suffering and abuses they experienced, they managed to overcome the struggles that afflicted them. Furthermore, Alice Walker dearly defined and depicted the struggles of women in her novels from the abusive hands of the patriarchal society. She presented the women characters and their struggles in an explicit manner. In addition, Walker reflected her works on the status experienced by black women in society, exposing the maltreatment they receive from their kin and white people. However, although Walker presented these women as inferior beings or the weaker sex, she had justified that these women could fight and assert their freedom. In the end, they conquered and overcame the struggles they experienced.
