MYTH AND MODERNITY: RICK RIORDAN'S REVISION OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY IN PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS SERIES

This study aimed to present the dynamic nature of Greek Mythology as a nuanced view of life in contemporary America. Being qualitative in nature. this study employed content analysis to analyze Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, utilizing Formalistic Approach and Mythological Approach to compare and discuss the presentation of the main character's characteristics to his mythological counterparts and how the selected settings and events from the Greek Mythology were being presented in the book series. Biographical Approach was used to identify how the elements of the character and events and the settings connect to the author's life. The results showed that the main character, Percy Jackson, who is a half mortal and a half god, is naturally troublesome, vindictive, brave and courageous yet impulsive. He is also smart, wise, and particularly devoted Percy being portrayed predominantly as Perseus. Theseus, Odysseus, and Jason-heroes from the Greek myths, shows that the revision of the ancient tales does not literally distort the original characters and their stories as well as the settings, but the series only presents an up-to-date fundamentals Although Rick Riordan employed Greek Mythology blended into the modern world, the characteristics of the character and events, and the settings are still stuck closely to the original versions of those existed in Greek myths.
