LANGUAGE USE AMONG MALE AND FEMALE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

Abstract

This study is qualitative in nature and utilizes descriptive content analysis. It employs an observation method to determine the differences in language use among Grade 8 male and female students of Calumpang High School SY 2018-2019. It sought to determine the differences in language use in the Dell Hymes SPEAKING Tool. It also attempted to examine the implications of gender differences in language teaching and learning. Based on the finding, the study shows that there indeed exists a difference between male and female students in language use. Females initiate the conversations first and are more frequently asking questions than males. Males interrupt more frequently in conversations than females. Based on another observation, females are more likely to use language to correct the mistakes of others, and males tend to make fun of the mistakes of their fellow males rather than correct them. Boys tend to remain quiet when females answer incorrectly. Also, females are more scaly to talk about personal matters frequently than males. Unlike females, males are not open to sharing their matters with anyone.
Moreover, females' language is more on personal and interpersonal functions. Females tend to try to be directive but fail as males' language is more likely to be directive than theirs. Also, males' language is imaginative, and referential Females' speech is more polite than males'. On the other hand, males are more likely to use impolite and informal language when talking and tend to use expletive and offensive words in their speech. Thus, Gender-based differences indeed exist and in this era of globalization, cautious and proper analysis of these differences is very much needed to facilitate an effective way of communication
