Abstract

This study was conducted in Tupi, South Cotabato from November to December. The main purpose of conducting this study is to evaluate the coffee production in the area. Respondents are divided in to two groups; the non-members and members of the association (TUCOGAI). Personal interview was conducted in gathering the data. The researcher coordinated with Tupi Coffee Growers Association Inc. (TUCOGAI) and Office of the Municipal Agriculturist for the secondary data needed. All the data gathered were analyzed through descriptive analysis. Cost benefit analysis was employed to evaluate the profitability of coffee production. The study evaluated different aspects of coffee farming which include: the socio-demographic profile of the coffee farmers, farm management practices, marketing practices, profitability of coffee farmers, the current problems encountered that need to be addressed, and the support and provisions of the local government.

Majority of the coffee farmers were land owners and only few are tenants. Production output and input data were gathered and analyzed. The cost and benefit analysis indicated that fertilizer incurred the highest cost of production. Given that the return on investment is computed 135% for non-members and 136% for members, it was concluded that the coffee production in Tupi, South Cotabato was profitable. However, there is a probability that coffee farming in the area is not sustainable because of low price, better technologies and proper coffee farm management which will affect the overall production of coffee. Although there were already existing government technical supports, it was not effective. It is recommended that local government and the TUCOGAI may consider to conduct more trainings and seminars on proper handling of coffee with the emphasis of its value and demand. Technical assistance may be extended and given regularly to the coffee farmers and monitor if the proper management practices were applied.
