Abstract

This study was conducted at Notre Dame of Dadiangas College Laboratory, General Santos City from February to March 2002. Three (3) culturally and morphologically distinct bacteria were isolated from the infected prawn (Penaeus monodon) and one of these (isolate 1) was found to be pathogenic in prawn. This isolate was sensitive to the Amoxicillin, Ampicillin and Chloramphenicol in decreasing order of sensitivity. Of the five (5) antibiotics screened, Amoxicillin having the highest zone of inhibition was found most effective control for the pathogenic bacterial isolate. Isolate 1 was able to demonstrate infection as red discoloration and black spot on the telson part of the prawn. The result of the present needs to be further verified in the laboratory since inoculation trial was conducted only once.
