Abstract

Stories of work placements of the Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL) graduates are the main focus of this study; it aimed to explore their shared experiences, perceptions on the academic preparation of the TVL track towards in relation to their current work, and their aspirations. This study is a qualitative in nature and used case study method. It involved five (5) TVL graduates who were selected based on pre-determined inclusion criteria. The participants were graduates of SHS-TVL track (SMAW and Plumbing) in 2018 at Fatima National High School. A researcher-made interview guide was utilized for the interview. The data gathered were thematically analyzed to empirically process the participants'

responses.

The findings in this study pointed out the importance of getting a National Certificate for job applications of the TVL graduates, it also revealed that despite the financial challenges they experienced, they expressed optimism. The academic preparation for work were perceived effective by the three (3) participants, and ineffective to two (2) of the participants; these perceptions are influenced by their acquisition of the National Certificate. Moreover, the aspirations of the participants as an employee for years are pursuing further education in college; to improve the education structure of the TVL track; career change to establish their own business, and to work abroad to improve their social status and income. These are the significant aspirations that the participants expressed.

This study encourages future quantitative research to support the findings in this qualitative study. To further expand its scope, the inclusion of the other TVL strands would better help to understand the employment experiences of the TVL graduates. Nonetheless, the findings and concepts of this study may serve as basis for future research endeavors on K to 12 Program in the Philippines.
